New Writing and Development of Jenny Greenteeth

We’re incredibly excited to begin the next stage of development for Jenny Greenteeth, a new story inspired by the Northern folklore myth of Jenny Greenteeth. Supported by funding from Art Council England the project will focus on scriptwriting, story development, research, and early creative exploration throughout the coming months.

Blending folklore, fantasy realism, and contemporary themes, Greenteeth explores grief, disappearance, memory, queerness, and the strange ways people survive loss. At the centre of the story is a mother searching for her missing son as the boundaries between reality, folklore, and memory begin to blur.

The project draws inspiration from the eerie and often overlooked figure of Jenny Greenteeth, a mythical being said to lurk beneath dark water waiting for those who stray too close. Rather than retelling the folklore directly, the work uses the myth as a starting point to explore modern fears, fractured families, inherited trauma, loneliness, and the deep pull of stories passed through generations.

For DAUR, this period of R&D is about creating space to experiment, investigate, and discover the emotional and imaginative language of the piece. The funding will support time for writing, research, collaboration, and the development of the wider world of Greenteeth before the project moves into further stages of development.
